Tips for Getting Out of Debt
Reducing credit card debt and then paying it off is the only way that you can realize your dreams. If you have credit card debt, you know how devastating it can be to many areas of your life. The only way you can move forward with your life and remove the limits is to come up with a plan for reducing credit card debt and sticking with it…no matter what.
Here are a few tips for helping you get on the road that will eventually lead to debt freedom:
1. Start living on cash. It is much easier to keep track of what you are spending with cash than with a debit or credit card.
2. Make a plan for spending. This is really a budget, but I hate the word so I refer to it as a spending plan. This is a guide that you should try to follow.
3. Keep a spending journal. Write down where your money is going and this will help you identify areas where you can cut expenses.
4. Call your credit card companies and ask to have your interest rates reduced. If you have been making your payments on time, your lenders should be willing to do this for you once a year. There are many things you can say that will convince your credit card companies that it is in their best interest to reduce your interest rates.
5. Find extra money. This is the item that will expedite your debt repayment. The best way to start is go through your home and identify the things that you no longer want or are not being used and sell them. Online auctions, garage sales and consignment shops make great options for making extra money and downsizing at the same time. Many people pick up extra shifts to make extra income, but the methods for making extra money are extensive.
If you plan on tackling your debt on your own, these suggestions will get you off to a great start and if you stick with it they will see you through to debt freedom. Becoming debt free on your own takes an organized plan and some people just feel so overwhelmed, they just don’t know where to begin. If you think this is you, contact a consumer credit counseling organization. They are nonprofit and are in the business of helping people get out of debt. If you have debt, waiting to do anything about it will limit your options and delay your dreams. Get started today!
